How to Design a More Energy-Efficient Home

Whether you are planning to design your new home from scratch, or if you just want to make a few changes to make your property more energy efficient, there has never been a better time for creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly home.

From choosing the right type of flooring to selecting smart landscaping to picking the right fixtures, keep reading to find out how you can design a more energy-efficient home in 2025.

Install Energy Efficient Lighting

The right lighting can transform your home from dark and uninviting to warm and welcoming in an instant. That being said, there is no reason why you can’t choose efficient and aesthetically pleasing lighting.

LED lights are now available in bright white light and soft warm light, meaning you can find the ideal lighting solution for your home and save energy at the same time.

LED lights are long-lasting, energy efficient and contain no mercury, making them the perfect option when designing a fuel-saving home.

You should also embrace natural light wherever possible and, if budget allows, look to invest in solar panels for your home.

Pick the Right Radiators

Radiators are essential home appliances, and yet they are often overlooked and expected to simply go on working efficiently with little to no maintenance. However, if you want to create an energy-efficient home, you need to choose the right radiators and ensure that you look after them.

Column radiators, which you can find at warmrooms.co.uk, are durable and efficient. Plus, they take up less space than cast iron radiators, but still have the ability to heat a large space. This type of radiator suits both contemporary and period properties, meaning that whatever style of property you have, you can enjoy the benefits of this highly effective heating appliance.

 Select Smart Landscaping

Energy efficiency isn’t just for your home, it can also be carried out into your outdoor space. If you want your garden to help you lead a more sustainable lifestyle, then you should look to plant native and low maintenance plants that will not require a lot of watering as this will help cut down your water usage.

It can also be a good idea to plant trees in areas that will not create shade in your home, as sunlight can help to warm your home in the colder months.

Choose Carpets

The type of flooring you pick can have a huge impact on your home’s ability to retain heat and stay feeling warm. Carpets will trap heat and keep your home warm during the colder winter months, whereas wooden flooring can make your property feel chilly.

If you don’t want to invest in new carpets, or you simply love your real wood floors, why not purchase some soft and thick rugs to put down once the weather turns colder?

No matter which option you choose - carpets or rugs, you will want to secure them with high-quality strong and clean bonding tapes. The application of specialized tape means your carpet or rug will be secure so that you and your family can prevent unfortunate slips, trips, and falls all while keeping the beautiful new carpets or rugs right where they are supposed to be.

Focus on Your Kitchen & Bathroom

Out of all the rooms in your home, it is these two that have the most appliances and fixtures. Plus, you are likely to spend a lot of your time in these two key rooms; therefore, you should focus your energy-saving efforts predominantly on them.

Consider replacing old appliances — budget allowing — with newer energy-efficient ones, and you could reduce your energy consumption significantly.

Energy-efficient fridges can be up to 20% more efficient than standard ones, and energy-efficient washing machines can use 30% less energy and 50% less water than their non-energy-saving counterparts.

Even if you only make a small design change to your home, you will still be able to reap the rewards, both in terms of savings and sustainability. So, why not make today the day you start planning a more energy-efficient home?

How Xbox Live Helped Me Go Outside

Image: Alina Bradford

Just a few years ago, I was pretty much a shut-in. The clinical term is agoraphobia, but for the people around me, it looked a lot like being a hermit. I hated going anywhere. Something as simple as going to the grocery store took days of mental preparation to psych myself up for the task. In the middle of the store, I would break out in a sweat. My face would feel like it was on fire and I always had the urge to ditch my purchase and run as fast as I could for the door. My family thought I was crazy because I always insisted on getting a cart, even if I just needed one item that I could easily carry in my hands. The truth was, I just needed something to hold on to. Something to hide behind.

The sudden need to go out, like getting a call that my child needed picked up from school, was terrifying. My lungs would feel like I had just run a 10k and my limbs would suddenly feel boneless.

Along with the agoraphobia was the fear of talking to anyone who wasn’t in my immediate friends and family circle. I would hit the reject button on my phone faster than you could blink if I thought the caller was anyone outside of my circle. You can imagine how well this strategy works when you have an office job.

I distinctly remember my boss berating me at my job as a graphic designer because I didn’t pick up the phone and call my supervisor to ask where some file was on her computer. Instead, I winged it. I was wasting time by not making that “simple phone call.” Oh, if he only understood how not so easy it was for me. In the end, I realized I couldn’t hold down a “normal” job, so I ended up on disability and doing freelance work from home, communicating with my clients only through email.

I knew I was missing out. I wanted to hard to be like everyone else that could just go outside and do things.

Like many who have a debilitating mental disability, I went to a therapist. After many sessions, I finally gleaned a nugget of information that hit me like a bag of bricks. Your brain can rewire itself simply by doing things outside of your comfort zone. What a concept! I could actually change my malfunctioning brain into one that may somewhat work like a functioning adult.

Of course, going outside and doing things was too big of a jump, but I could start small, right? One of the first things I decided on trying was talking to people…sort of.

Ever since I was a toddler I’ve been a gamer. It all started with Pitfall and Asteroids on Atari using joysticks that my baby brother chewed to bits. Later on, we upgraded to Nintendo and the Mario Brothers games. As an adult, Xbox and PC gaming took over with Halo, Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Battlefield, Tekken…the list goes on and on.

After all this time, my gaming experience of choice stuck with Xbox console systems, but I avoided Xbox Live like it was the plague. Play with other real life people? Ha, uh, no.

My new epiphany had me looking at the Turtle Beach headset my husband bought me a little differently, though. What if I played online and actually used that fuzz covered microphone to talk to people? It wasn’t as intimidating as talking to people face-to-face. The gamers of the world didn’t know me. If they were jerks, I could mute them.

Don’t think that this idea had me turning on my Xbox, booting up a game and signing into Xbox Live. Nope. That would have been too easy. My husband decided that I needed a push and had me join a Call of Duty game with his online friends. These were some nice guy and gal gamers that were pre-approved by someone I loved, he reasoned.

After making excuses for a few weeks, I finally gave the whole thing a try. No, I didn’t really talk much for the first few days. I mostly listened. What I heard was people having fun, teasing each other and kicking douche canoes from the party whenever things got out of hand.

Eventually, the gamer in me overcame the agoraphobic shut-in and I started to converse with the people in my Xbox Live parties and lobbies. At first it was simple things like, “There’s a camper up in the barn loft.” Eventually, I was able to carry on full conversations and even make jokes.

This small thing, mixed with other tiny footsteps has literally brought me out of my cave. Though I haven’t beaten my anxiety and agoraphobia completely, spending time on Xbox Live helped and continues to keep me in touch with the world outside my home. In a way, Xbox Live helped me live.

Olympic Photographers Peter Read Miller and Damian Strohmeyer Share How to Take the Perfect Action Shot

Photographers Peter Read Miller and Damian Strohmeyer have captured just about every major sporting event you can think of, including the Olympics, World Series, World Cup and the Super Bowl. They are also Canon Explorers of Light, a program created in 1995 to highlight outstanding photographers and to teach upcoming photographers.

Miller and Strohmeyer know what it takes to capture an amazing action shot and they’ve agreed to share some of their tips with me. Here’s their tips.

Photographers need to research the sport to get the perfect action shot. Credit: Peter Read Miller

Do your research

Take some time before you go to a particular event to gain a better perspective of the venue and its do’s and don’ts. For example:

  • Is the event indoor or outdoor?

  • What type of equipment can you bring?

  • What access will you have as a non-accredited photographer?

  • Is there a way to work-around some of these restrictions?

Doing your research can have you well prepared for that perfect shot and can keep others from being irritated with you. “Being kind and courteous always helps,” says Miller.

Know What You’re Watching

Much like knowing the venue, it helps to know about the sport or event you’re shooting. “Whether it’s skiing, hockey or figure skating, having some knowledge of the sport or event, what countries are competing and the players will help you anticipate when and where the crucial moments will occur,” said Strohmeyer. The more you know the better your pictures will be.

The glass is always half full

You’re not a professional photographer, and you most likely won’t have the access they get. Still, act like a pro and problem solve like they would and plan what images you would like to capture.

For example, the moment could be a shot of someone at the finish line of the downhill skiing event or at the end of their figure skating routine. Give yourself an assignment as if you were a pro. “Understanding where you are and using that will help you make the most of what is in-frame and guide you to capture the best image possible. Work with what you’ve been given,” Miller advises.

Travel light, but use a good lense to get up-close shots like this. Credit: Damian Strohmeyer

Travel light

Accredited photographer or not, you never want to be in the way of a spectator’s view of the action. Only bring one or two lenses and pick the ones that you believe will allow you to capture a wide variety of shots. Some examples of versatile lenses for action shots, according to Strohmeyer include:

  • Sigma 120–300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM “Sports” lens

  • Sigma 50–100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens

  • Canon EF 70–200mm f/2.8L USM lens

  • Canon EF 24–70mm f/2.8L II USM lens

  • Tamron 70–200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 lens

Also, if you have one, bring a tele-convertor to extend the zoom range and keep your load lighter.

Cropping and Framing

The file size of most modern DSLRs will allow for plenty of cropping. Instead of shooting too tight and running the risk of cutting of an arm or legs (a big no-no), shoot a little looser and then crop, then crop again, then step away for a few minutes and come back and crop again.

These tips should get you on your way to taking quick shots that are crisp and clear.

Lefant M571 Vacuum and Mopping Robot Review

The Lefant M571 ($260) is a new robot vacuum on the market that also mops. The company sent me one to try out. I was pleasantly surprised with this little bot vac. Here’s what I found.

Vacuuming

The M571 is a little dynamo when it comes to cleaning carpets and hard surfaces. It has 2200Pa suction, which is quite a bit more than some of its competitors on the market. I could immediately see the difference. The M571 sucked up glitter, dog fur, and even bits of broken egg shell (my Huskies had a bit of a trash can raid) off of my carpet.

It also did a great job sweeping my kitchen floor and the hardwood around the house. Its dual sweeping brushes push the dirt and debris to the roller brush where it is sucked away into the dust bin.

Mopping

Lefant M571 robot vacuum review mopping.jpg

The fact that the M571 can mop is one of my daughter’s favorite features because she hates mopping. This robot really does make the job easier. You just take out the dust bin, replace it with the mopping bin filled with water, and attach the mopping pad. Then, you just let the robot clean.

I found that the pad will wipe up most spots on the floor, though you may need to pre-soak harder, dried on messes with your favorite floor cleaner. Though the robot doesn’t suck up the water used to clean the floor, if you set it to medium water flow in the app, the floor gets only slightly damp and dries in just a few minutes.

App

Lefant life app robot vacuum review.jpg

The app is very easy to use and isn’t glitchy at all, unlike some other robot vacuum apps. One of the app features I particularly enjoyed was the Manual Mode. This lets you drive the robot vacuum around like a remote control car. This is quite useful when you just want to spot clean your floor.

Extra features

In addition to vacuuming and mopping, the Lefant M571 has a few stand-out features. I really like that it comes with a remote so that you can control it without going to the app. Many robot vacuums don’t come with remotes anymore and it’s a shame because my other family members don’t want extra apps on their phones, but would also like to run the robot vacuum. A remote solves that problem.

Lefant M571 robot vacuum review remote.jpg

Another feature I like is that the robot vac can be used with Alexa or Google Assistant. So, you can can control it by saying things like, “Alexa, turn on robot.”

The battery length is impressive, as well. The M571 can clean for up to 180 minutes on a full charge. This allowed the M571 to clean several large rooms in my house without needing to recharge.

Something I find annoying about robot vacuums is how loud they can be. The M571 is very quiet. I was able to watch television while it ran. Lefant says this is because the ducts were carefully designed to allow for powerful suction, while still remaining quiet.

A big thing I noticed is that the Lefant M571 managed to prevent itself from getting stuck under furniture and cabinet edges. This is the first robot vacuum I’ve tried that managed this. That alone gives this robot vacuum my seal of approval.
