Note: I don’t know anything about these positions other than what I post. I weed out the seedy looking ones, but it is your job to be diligent when applying. Also, please don’t message me with questions about the postings. If a link doesn’t work the posting has probably been taken down because the gig has been filled. If you have a gig for freelance writers that pays at least $50 a piece or over $20 an hour, please contact me and I will include your gig in next week’s post.

Backpacking, the outdoors, and more articles needed

From Adam Roy, Sr. Digital Editor at Backpacker magazine, via Pitchwhiz:

I am an editor and I do take pitches (backpacking, the outdoors, and anything you can reasonably link to it) for Backpacker Magazine. Online rates range from $150-$250, with average being $175-$200. We may, on rare occasions, pay more for something that really makes us see stars, and sometimes pay less for very short hits or contributions to larger round-ups. Here are a few ways to get an article on Backpacker's site: —Bring me something timely (newsy or seasonal) —Bring me something I haven't heard of before (a trail, a skill, a profile, new science, an exercise routine, etc) —Show me something old from a new angle —Be able to summarize your story in a sentence or two (I know, it loses nuance, but I'm an online editor in the end, and it will convince me that your concept is solid.) Here are some things that will make it harder to land an assignment, but not impossible: —Pitch an essay about a hike that changed your life/where you overcame adversity and came out stronger for it. (I get dozens of these and they make my eyes glaze over.) —Pitch me a destination story about a trail outside of North America (we cover these, but less often than US/Canadian trails, so the bar is high.) —Pitch me a destination story about a place that's exceptionally well-documented—the Wonderland Trail, Yosemite Valley, etc. You don't need to have experience writing about the outdoors or a vast portfolio to write for Backpacker Magazine. If you're a competent and reliable writer with good ideas, we'll work with you.

Pay: $150-$250 per article
